"New" Living Room Chair

I took a break from all the textile art (<a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2011/05/diy-felted-bead-necklace.html">necklace</a>, <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2011/05/diy-needle-felted-art.html">abstracts</a>, and <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2011/05/im-over-at-young-crafty-today.html">pretty yellow flowers</a>) to re-arrange some furniture, with smile inducing results.  It can be so tricky to decorate our small townhouse because sometimes I have to work with what we have and work with limited funds.  <br /><br />I've mentioned the need to find a work surface for Hubby - something small, for casual use.  After lots of hmmm-ing and haw-ing, we decided not to <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2011/04/still-nosey-newt.html">find a unit to serve as guest storage <em>and </em>his desk</a>.  We decided it makes the most sense for me to just share the office, instead of relegating him to the guest room.  With a location determined, we thought about getting a vintage teak unit, like the one pictured below, to replace <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2011/03/bookcase-tweaking.html">my expedit</a> and serve as his work surface.  <br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Still a Nosey Newt

There's a New Chair in There

The guestroom has a new addition: the vintage teak chair with new upholstery.  It seems picking the fabric was the hard part (see <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2010/12/fabric-of-our-lives.html">here</a> and <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2010/12/youre-one-that-i-want.html">here</a>).  The fabric was ordered, and the chair was professionally, recovered within a week.  Yes, I had the chair professionally recovered.  I'd be ashamed if I wasn't so darn excited.  But a good DIY-er knows when they are over their head (take a look at the close ups).  Plus, we have sooooo many projects in the townhouse, if this were left in our hands it might not see the light of day for years (that's actually how I got it: another DIY gal realized she'd never get around to tackling it, and <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2010/12/hejda-ikea-chair.html">sold it to me</a>!).<br /><br />So, remember <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2010/11/guest-bedroom-before-after.html">the guestroom</a>?  Here's a memory booster:<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; TLC for Teak Update

Spot the Difference

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><strong>Can you spot the difference between photos A & B?</strong><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><strong> </strong> </span></span><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;">Yes, I did move Hubert the Hibiscus and move the plant stand my grandpa made there.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>It was really a trick question.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>But—bigger news—the thermostat is gone!!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>When previous owners converted our heating system from electric to hot water (thank you!) it was changed to operate on one main thermostat which we replaced with a fancy new programmable one. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>But every room was left with a big 'ole ugly brown thermostat that was purely “decorative”.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>So, my clever Hubby made sure no power was going to them, removed them, then patched, primed and painted the walls.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>We think that the small things (like new hinges, doorknobs, etc.) make a big difference.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Well, we hope so because it sure is more affordable than the big stuff (new sofa, new sofa, new sofa).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Now every single room is useless thermostat free!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span></span><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 115%;">Please tell me if “</span><span lang="EN" style="line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN;">Hejdå” does, in fact, mean “good-bye” in Swedish.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>If it doesn’t, then darn you wikipedia.</span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Anyway, I found a perfect chair for the guest room.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>I couldn’t find one I wanted (for the price I wanted—truth be told I found many I wanted) in the classifieds or in shops, so I posted a “want” ad with a pic of a chair I liked.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>A super stylish woman replied (who gave me a tour of her home and I am green with envy).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>She had a chair that met my description and hadn’t wanted to sell it, but it wasn’t being put to use.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>She didn’t have the time to give it the TLC it wants (needs).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Knowing someone wanted it and would give it a loving home helped her say good-bye.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>She was also jazzed it wasn’t being scooped up by a vendor—they’re like hawks here.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>This is the second time I’ve had success posting a want ad, as opposed to clambering for an item already posted.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span></span></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit; See <strong><a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2010/11/blog-post.html">here</a></strong> and <strong><a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2011/01/were-floored.html">here</a></strong>) and new closet fittings.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>We also painted everything—the walls, trim and ceilings, even the new bed!—the same crisp, clean white used in almost every room.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><br /><br /><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I repurposed my beloved maple armoire (the first piece of furniture I ever bought) for linens and storage for guests.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>The vintage teak bedside table (meant for beside a sofa) was an estate sale find and the Lotte lamp matches the pair in the living room.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>It too had lost its original vintage shade, but a crisp white drum shade suits it well.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>This non-traditional assembly of furniture works for us, which is a bonus because we didn't have to purchase too many items.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  </span>Even though the items don’t match, I’m trying to create balance—a small bedside table and lamp would make the room seem lopsided. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I tried to use substantial pieces, with height and presence (both items lived elsewhere in our previous dwelling).</span><br /><br /><strong>Still to do</strong>: curtains!  But so far the neighbours haven't complained.  And a new reading chair.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><span style="font-family: inherit;">We removed the old tile and removed much of the wall at the same time, so we replaced the drywall and then installed subway tile in a herringbone pattern for visual interest.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">  We worked in very small sections until we got the hang of it.  </span>We opted for brushed silver edging that matches the NEW brushed silver hardware and NEW light fixtures.  This pattern required LOTS of measuring, cutting, swearing, re-measuring, cutting . . .  We also installed the new countertops ourselves (it is laminate, but I think it looks like concrete--I love it!).  We did a lot of research and it turned out to be a pretty easy task, which saved us $400 of labour.  We did opt for delivery though because we have a small car.  (CORRECTION: Husband says, "we don't have a small car, we have a Nissan Versa.  You can't post lies."  Our beloved Charlie is up on blocks while we save up money to race him.  No joke.)</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /> </span><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;
