Marimekko & Table for Two

DIY Window Covering for Awkward Windows

I LOVE hand sewn goods.  I just hate to be the person whose hands are sewing them.  You know I thoroughly enjoy DIY projects: <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2010/12/new-evidence-of-painting-charlie.html">painting a car</a>, <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2011/01/diy-treadle-sewing-machine-base-desk.html">making a desk</a>, <a href="http://dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com/2010/11/blog-post.html">tearing up carpet</a> . . . anything but sewing.  Happily, my mom offered to do some sewing for me while she was here, so I made an addition to the guest room:<br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><strong>How to:</strong></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Basically, these curtains consist of two pockets for flat, tension [Hubby says its technically a "compression"] curtain rods.  The rods fit just inside the window frame and hold the curtain at the top and bottom, for a ruched look.  (As a bonus, we used leftover from the master bedroom curtains, so the cost was low: four tension fit rods & that's it!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Once my mom sewed the rod pockets, top and bottom, and also hemmed the sides, we fit the curtains into place.  The width of the curtain is up to you and dependent on how much ruching you want.  You could make these completely tight, with no ruching.  Play around with the fabric, but doubling the width of the window is a good start.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Fun Fabric Find

I mean, can you get anymore vintage than that? I got a sewing machine, but had absolutely no clue how to thread it. Yes, I read the instructions... repeadetly... for hours. But, it just was not sinking in! Hence, I did my first sewing project entirely by hand. I can stitch by hand, yes. By machine, not yet. I got this sewing book at Borders a couple of nights ago and it has some illustrations to threading that are dummy friendly! So, I love it. : ) Now I can really learn to sew. What do you all think? Not bad for a first sewing project, eh? I did it entirely from scratch too! I went to JoAnn Fabrics and got all the stuff I thought I'd need and just came home and put it together in a few hours. I don't want it to take <em>hours</em> ever again. So, I better learn to use that machine STAT! Now... how does all this relate to vintage decor and fashion? After all, this <em>is</em> a vintage decor and fashion blog. Well, vintage and aprons go together like flocks of a feather, don't they? Aprons are a symbol of times past. They do seem to be making quite the comeback today, I've noticed. Anthropologie sells gorgeous, unique ones (<a href="http://www.anthropologie.com/">http://www.anthropologie.com/</a>). I actually buy my aprons there for work at the shop. Target is now selling some pretty nifty ones too! (<a href="http://www.target.com/">http://www.target.com/</a>). They aren't just great to wear while doing cleaning around the house, painting a canvas or cooking a meal and coloring with the kids, but they make wonderful and unique accessories to any home. Especially to the kitchen! I hang mine from a hook next to my stove. You can also use them as curtains to a small kitchen window. They come in so many beautiful colors and patterns.
