Living Small, Living Well

In fact, I don't know why I said "thinking about living small" like its a new concept, when I do live small already! What I really should say, is living in a small home that also qualifies as dream living. I would rather feel like I live outside...with air conditioning of course! (I found this house on an amazing site my sister introduced me to called <a href="http://www.trendir.com/house-design/">Trendir</a>. Check it out for some more amazing modern homes. Oh, its so romantic!Audrey and Gregory in Rome...what could be better?! What's interesting though, is that one of my favorite parts of the movie is the tiny apartment "Joe Bradley" resides in. Its such a tiny little space, but packed with character. I always get blown away when they step out onto that amazing balcony with a view. </div><div style="text-align: center;">As I was watching Roman Holiday, I was reminded of another great movie with a charming apartment.An American in Paris. For years I've imagined myself in a charming little place just like Gene Kelly's. If you haven't seen it, go rent it because Kelly's apartment is a great study in small space living! In my imagination, all European bohemian types live in apartments just like these. Surely they do, right? Don't blow it for me, if you know they don't. I think I'm rambling again, but I wanted to show a real life little abode that inspires me. Ironically, its not an apartment at all but actually a house boat. For any of you who read <a href="http://blog.piajanebijkerk.com/WordPress/">Pia Jane Bijkerk,</a> you will be familiar with her <a href="http://blog.piajanebijkerk.com/WordPress/category/the-houseboat/">"Petit Bateau"</a>. A Small Space Wonder

Coincidently, I was reading the new <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apartment-Therapy-Presents-Hundreds-Solutions/dp/0811859827">Apartment Therapy book</a><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apartment-Therapy-Presents-Hundreds-Solutions/dp/0811859827">,</a> and saw her home in it! Alison is a furniture and interior designer from Miami. Her little jewel box apartment is only 396sq. ft. I just can't imagine. My husband and I lived in 850 sq, ft. apartment for a while, and I thought I was going to lose my mind! I think Alison's apartment really works because of her well thought out storage and furniture layout. The center-piece is the large storage unit that sits at the foot of the bed. It has open storage on both sides, but has open spaces that the eye to see through it. In my experience, even a small space needs a visual barrier (like the large bookcase). A room is much more interesting when you can see "around" something, and not see the entire space all at once. It is a fun detail in a mostly neutral colored home. I recommend the new <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Apartment-Therapy-Presents-Hundreds-Solutions/dp/0811859827">Apartment Therapy book</a>; it is a lot of fun.
