So many people come over my place and compliment me on my home decor. "It's so cool!" "So unique" "Where do you find this stuff?" Truth is, I have accumulated the things I have in time. I take my time. If you want to decorate in a way that will impress... take your time and be choosy with the items you buy. Make sure they represent who YOU are. If you are quirky and fun... add a fun pillow on your couch from Anthropologie or Ikea. If you are serious and reserved, perhaps a classy keepsake box could store potpurri on your coffee table. If you're a tech freak, then a nice, sleek flat screen tv and stereo can be the center of the room. There is no right way to decorate. There is just the honest way. Be true to who you are and then sprinkle it allover your living space.
Hint: A great place to purchase unique, one of a kind items is at vintage/antique shops. They normally have items that you won't find anywhere else and that will be great conversation starters. As many of you know, I work at one of these little shops on Sundays. I recently sold a church pew to a lady as a bench for her new (long) dining room table. The table top was made of old wood floors from an old Savannah, GA home. Talk about a conversation piece!!! The buyer was thrilled at the idea and she went home with a unique item that is sure to inspire her decorating buds again and again. I'm sure I'll see her around soon.
If you don't know where to begin, browse the Internet.
The most important advice I can give you is... don't go to Rooms to Go or one of these "buy in bulk" stores. They're unoriginal! The last thing you want is to come home to someone else's idea of "home." Make your home truly YOURS, by putting thought into its decor. Take it from me... it takes time, but it is a truly satisfying experience when it finally comes together. Happy decorating!
