No one ever said that vintage design= boring, dated, brown and blah antique pieces from Grandma's attic. That's the whole beauty of the style. It can fit so many different tastes. Are you more of the colorful, fun, bohemian, unique type? Then, I say you are in for a fantastic treat! Vintage design can be all those wonderful things and more. All you need to add to the mix is a little creativity and honesty. Be honest with yourself about what makes you smile and feel at home. I, for instance, absolutely love nature. But, I also love color and fun bubbly designs. Then again... I also love vintage items. So, I thought I had a dilemma. That is, until I decided to decorate the guest room.
It's a perfect place to experiment with really. I mean... if you hate it, you can close the door for a couple of weeks and not walk into it while you decide how to fix your decor mistake! Here, I am showing you some images of my final product. One that I am actually really happy with. I bought a very old kitchen cupboard in a sage green color. I placed it in the guest room because I had nowhere else to put it. (I just loved it and had to buy it!!). It provided a starting point for me, however. An inspiration, if you will. Once the piece was in the room, I was able to picture everything else with ease. I decided to get creative and be honest. I love birds and nature. So, I decided to put my bird design pillows on the guest bed. But, I wanted a unique bed spread. The one you see here is actually not a bed spread! It's not a bed... anything! It's a shower curtain I found on sale at Anthropologie!! (http://www.anthropologie.com/). Yes, I walked up to the counter to pay for it thinking and swearing the thing was a bed duvet cover. When I asked the sales clerk, she just responded with an annoyed chuckle and said... "um... it's a shower curtain. Do you still want it?" "Absolutely!" I said. "I'm not using something so pretty as a shower curtain! I'll find some other use for it!" I had no idea what at the time, but I found a home for it now and it looks fabulous!
My next step was to think about the guest who would be staying there. They would need good lighting, a place to sit, a nice window and a super comfortable bed. I placed a chandelier over the bed, a great rocking chair next to the window and a bed filled with feather down. So, think on these things when deciding what on earth to do with that extra room. If only I could stop sleeping in there now and move back to my bedroom.
Happy Decorating!
